Tersanas Cave

A spectacular big cave in the same style and size as the famous Grande Grotta in Kalymnos, with almost the same climbing quality but on smaller stalactites. Tersanas Cave is right next to the sea by the Gramvousa Peninsula on the northwest coast. The cave is very close to the famous, almost exotic, Balos Beach (on the other side of the peninsula, with transparent blue/green waters). The whole area is stunning, and Balos consistently makes the Top Ten list of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Climbing: Fantastic, very long routes on tufas and stalactites. The cave’s massive roof looks very hard, and we expect to see routes graded 9a or harder here soon. Existing routes start from 6c+ and the grades tend to be stiff, while the bolting it is quite ‘airy’ and spaced. Equipping started around 2010, primarily by Christos Tsoutsias, Vassilis Koutoupis and Aristoteles Mavromatis.

Conditions: There is shade all day, depending on which side you are at. It can get quite wet/humid due to proximity with the sea.
