Nafplio

Nafplio is located in a protected bay of the Argolic Gulf, just 1.5 hours by car from Athens. The crags of Nafplio are in fantastic seaside locations; for the most part, the cliffs are solid limestone featuring slightly overhanging red, yellow, and white rock. Nafplio itself is very lively, and its Old Town is a popular weekend destination teeming with quayside cafés, restaurants and hotels. Thanks to Nafplio’s location and layout, you can easily navigate it on foot, and go climbing, jogging or swimming within minutes. Lastly, Nafplio has a very mild climate, which makes it one of the best venues in Greece for winter climbing.

Other nearby crags: Eight more crags with a total of about 300 routes are within an hour’s drive from Nafplio. Most routes have been equipped by Jim Titt, a former resident; Hans Weninger has also bolted quite a few. Some crags like Didyma (at 1100m altitude) are certainly worth a visit, if you have the time and prefer to climb grades between 5c-6c. These crags are not included in the new Greece Sport Climbing guidebook; however, a new topo of the Argolis crags is available.

Access to sector Akronafplia: After severe rainfall in 2007, some rocks were dislodged from a non-climbing cliff above the Akronafplia promenade, not too far from the climbing sectors. Since then the municipality restricted access to the promenade and banned walking and climbing until further notice. To our knowledge no other incidents have occurred, but the ban is still technically in effect. People have long since started to walk, run, and climb again. Climbers have been advocating for years against this arbitrary ban, and they strongly encourage others to include Akronafplia in their climbing itinerary.
